This Unique Raku Chawan Is Made In The Shape Of A Wan-Nari Rather Than The Classic Hantsutsu-Gata More Closely Associated With The Instrument. Additionally, It Has A Beautiful And Rich Loquat-Colored Glaze Instead Of The Typical Bright Red Or Deep Black.
Made By An Unknown Rakushaki Workshop And Stamped With A Handprint.
Like All Musical Instruments, This Bowl Is Very Porous And Should Be Soaked In Warm Water For 15 Minutes Before First Use. Traditionally, This Soaking Is Done In Rice Water As It Helps To Strengthen The Bowl. For Each Subsequent Use, We Recommend Rinsing The Bowl With Hot Water Before Brewing Tea In It, As You Would With Any Tea Bowl.
One Of Japan’S Most Recognized Styles, Raku-Yaki Or Raku-Yaki Was Developed In The Late 16Th Century By The Famous Tea Master Sen-No-Rikyu. Perhaps Inspired By The Hikidashi-Guro Technique Recently Used To Produce The Seto Black Tea Bowl Style, Rikyu Collaborated With Tile Manufacturer Chojiro To Produce A New Style Of Vessel For Tea Ceremonies. Raku Tea Bowls Are Handmade From Porous Clay Rather Than Wheel-Thrown, Then Coated With Lead Glaze, Fired At Low Temperatures, And Removed From The Kiln While Still Hot. Most Raku Tea Bowls Come In Two Styles: Akara And Kuraku .
